Lighthouse of Alexandria

Lighthouse Of Alexandria Remains

The remains of the Pharos of Alexandria, the fabled 120 meter lighthouse, were discovered at an underwater site near the entrance to the Egyptian port in 1994.

French archaeologists believe they have also found the ruins of the old city of Alexandria, including the palace where Cleopatra and Mark Anthony fell in love.

Archaeologists saved several pieces from the seabed of the lighthouse itself as well as some temples nearby.

Divers have made some fascinating discoveries on the site, including at least three layers of blocks, some estimated to be as heavy as 70 tons, which may have been part of the lighthouse.

Whatever is recovered of the lighthouse and the mysterious palace and ancient city - of which experts know next to nothing - will belong to Egypt.
